The Maharajah & Maharanee of Kapurthala
H.H. The Maharani of Kapurthala, formerly Anita Delgardo (Delgado), the famous Spanish dancer who married Maharajah Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala in 1908. The Maharajah was, according to a report in The Tatler that year, the most highly-cultured noblemen in India, being a fluent French scholar and a deeply-read man of letters. He has been out at the front, and also, like tthe rest of the indian princes, has given magnificent proof of his loyalty to the Allied cause. His Highness has recently taken up half a million francs of the French War Loan. His rent roll alone is estimated at about 180, 000 a year, and he is the possessor of some of the most magnificent jewellery in the world, the value of which is reputed to be over 8, 000, 000. The Sketch notes that he had equipped three companies for the war and one of his sons was fighting in Flanders. Date: 1915
