LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin over pier, Walton, Essex
At 4pm on 19 August 1931 crowds of onlookers lined the pier and promenades at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, to watch the famous Graf Zeppelin fly along the Essex coastline. It was a German-built and operated passenger-carrying hydrogen-filled rigid airship which ran commercially from 1928 to 1937, named after the German pioneer of airships, Ferdinand von Zeppelin. During its operating life, the airship made 590 flights covering more than a million miles. It was designed to be operated by a crew of 36 officers and men.
