Lord Mayor of London opening Whiteleys store
The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Boor Crosby (1830-1916), opening Whiteleys new premises in Bayswater, West London. At the time this was the biggest shop in the world, with a theatre and a golf course on the roof. The original Whiteleys department store was created by William Whiteley, who started a drapery shop at 31 Westbourne Grove in 1863. By 1890 over 6000 staff were employed. In 1989 Whiteleys reopened as a shopping centre
