LCC-LFB Clerkenwell Emergency Tender
Clerkenwells emergency tender with its fire crew in Proto breathing apparatus. Clerkenwell fire station was built in 1870. By 1919 self contained firefighting breathing apparatus sets were becoming available and the London Fire Brigade introduced several special tenders to provide a rapid response to serious fires where deep penetration into smoke was required. Here, Clerkenwells breathing apparatus tender is shown with its crew and some of its specialist equipment, including an early petrol lighting generator. The Proto one-hour breathing apparatus sets used pure oxygen -- note the spare oxygen cylinders on the running board
