Jeakes Drying Closet
A portable clothes drying closet which was to be sent to the Crimea, for use in the hospital in Scutari. The manufacture of the closet by William Jeakes, of Bloomsbury, was funded by philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts, who also sent an engineer to accompany the closet to Scutari. It was apparently capable of drying 1000 articles of linen in twenty-five minutes, and also incorporated a washing trough and wringing machine. Date: 1855
