The French Memorial - Lyle Hill, Greenock

The Free French Memorial - Lyle Hill, Greenock with Cardwell Bay and Gourock in background - Scotland. The war memorial (built in the shape of the Cross of Lorrain) commemorates the Free French forces who fought in the Second World War and stands on the western brow of the hill. It has plaques commemorating the loss of the Flower-class corvettes Alyssa and Mimosa, and of the submarine Surcouf. Locally, it is also associated with the memory of the loss of the Maille Breze which blew up at the Tail of the Bank. Date: circa 1950s

Village Scene - Ivory Coast - 1940s Featured 24 Apr 2019 Print

Village Scene - Ivory Coast - 1940s

Village Scene - Ivory Coast - 1940s - French West Africa was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Dahomey and Niger. The capital of the federation was Dakar. The federation existed from 1895 until 1960. The houses are raised on stilts (pile dwellings) to protect from flooding. This is also obviously a coastal or riverside community as there are large fishing nets drying on poles close to the houses. Pile dwellings can still be found in the Ivory Coast in places such as Ebrie Lagoon. Date: 1947

British Empire Exhibition - Jack Hobbs modelled in butter

British Empire Exhibition, Wembley - Jack Hobbs modeled in butter! Having seen the success of the Prince of Wales in butter in the Canadian Pavilion in the 1924 season of the British Empire Exhibition, in 1925 the Australians placed a larger butter sculpture in their pavilion at Wembley Park. It showed England cricketer Jack Hobbs being stumped at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the 1924-5 test series, which Australia had won 4-1. Date: 1925
