Fragments of Zeppelin, 1916 Featured 8 May 2018 Image

Fragments of Zeppelin, 1916

Three fragments obtained from a recently-destroyed Zeppelin. No 1. outer covering of Zeppelin (a doped fabric, i.e. a woven material treated with waterproofing solution). No 2. Inner lining of Zeppelin (finely woven and quite soft, probably some material as above but undoped). No 3. Fragment of Zeppelin gas bag (from one of the hydrogen gas bags. It is a piece of goldbeater's skin and appears incredibly thin and fragile). Date: 1916

Field of Chumbera Nopal Cactus (Prickly Pear) at Las Palmas Featured 8 May 2018 Image

Field of Chumbera Nopal Cactus (Prickly Pear) at Las Palmas

Field of Chumbera Nopal Cactus (Prickly Pear) at Las Palmas, Cran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Insects are gathered off of the cactus they grow up in, and are then used for the extraction of the natural dye carminic acid (cochineal). The rags draped over the Cacti (seen here) are part of this process. Truly rags to riches...!! Date: circa 1920s
