St James's Theatre

Promotional postcard for St James's Theatre London. St James's Theatre (est. 1835) was a 1, 200-seat theatre located in King Street, at Duke Street, St James's, London. The elaborate theatre was designed with a neo-classical exterior and a Louis XIV style interior by Samuel Beazley and built by the partnership of Peto & Grissell for the tenor and theatre director, John Braham. The interior was decorated by the Frederick Crace Company. Date: circa 1900s

Novelty promotional postcard for The Spring Chicken by George Grossmith, from Coquin de Printemps by Adolphe Jaime & George Dunval (Folies Dramatiques, Paris, 13th June 1888); music Ivan Caryll.& Lionel Monckton. First produced at the Gaiety Theatre, 30th May 1905. Cardboard cut-out flyer for George Edwardes Company. which operates by a tab at the back, thus moving the young woman in and out of the chicken coop. Date: 1905

Shakespeare Theatre, Clapham Junction

Promotional postcard of The Shakespeare Theatre, Clapham Junction. The theatre was built by Charles Gray Hill to the designs of the prolific theatre Architect W. G. Sprague on a site next to the Battersea Town Hall (which is still standing today) on Lavender Hill, and was separated from it by Theatre Street. The Theatre opened under the management of William Bennett on the 16th of November 1896 and was mainly used as a 'legitimate theatre' showing drama and plays, but was also put into use as a pantomime house at Christmas time. Date: circa 1896
