Bystander front cover featuring Miss Mary Ashley

Hon. Ruth Mary Clarisse Ashley, daughter of multi-millionaire, Lt-Col Wilfred Ashley (1st Baron Mount Temple) and sister of Edwina, Countess Mountbatten. She married the WWI flying ace, Captain Alec Cunningham-Reid in 1927. The couple later divorced and he sued her for half her fortune. Pictured on the front cover of The Bystander when she was making her debut. Her sister, Edwina was holding a dance for her at Brook House.

Thunder of the cannon in Hyde Park, to signal of the arrival of (to be) King George V and Queen Mary to Westminister Abbey signed from the roof of the Abbey at eight minutes to eleven, gunners and the pealing of the bells told thousands of people who were far out of sight. Date: 22nd June 1911
