Sketch cover - the Marchesa Malacrida

Marchesa Nadja Malacrida portrayed by Olive Snell on the front cover of The Sketch magazine. She was born Louisa Nadia Green, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Green and niece of Lord Cowdray. Married Pier Malacrida Saint-August in 1922 who was a society decorator. The Sketch magazine mentions her, 'charming and unusually decorated house in Mayfair', adding, 'The severe style of her coiffure suits the Marchesa's type of beauty to perfection.' Date: 1929

Mrs McCorquodale (Barbara Cartland) dressed as champagne

Dame Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland (1901-2000), married name Mrs Barbara McCorquodale, British novelist. Photographed here in a sparkling champagne dress, part of a 'living Christmas dinner' set of fancy dress at the Santa Claus Ball held at the Kit-Cat club on 18 December 1929 in aid of Queen Charlotte's Hospital National Mother-Saving Campaign. The ball featured a pageant on the theme of Queen Charlotte's Christmas Dinner where well-known Society beauties were disguised as different courses, wine, spirits and puddings! The dresses were designed by the artist Mrs 'Peter' Baxendale and the event was organised by Barbara herself. Date: 1929

Portrait of English actor Hugh Wakefield (1888-1971), possessing, according to The Sketch in which this painting was reproduced, 'a genius for the portrayal of inoffensive inebriates.' Wakefield had a distinguished war career when he was a test pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. Note the copy of The Sketch magazine by the side of the armchair. Date: 1929
