The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - Crossing the Sands by cart

Crossing the Sands by cart (nearly too late!) from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland, England - a tidal island off the northeast coast of England with a recorded history from the 6th century. An important centre of Celtic Christianity under Saints Aidan of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne and Eadberht of Lindisfarne. After Viking invasions (and the Norman conquest of England) a priory was re-established. A small castle was also built on the island in 1550. Date: circa 1941

Gruyere region, Switzerland. The cowherd (Armailli) - the traditional shepherd of the Alps of Fribourg and Vaud. The master armailli is the leader of the cheesemaking operation and is equipped with an Oji frame, worn on the shoulders, to transport the cheese down from the hillside. Date: 1930s

Torbat Heydarrieh Ghotbed-Din Heydar - Iran

Torbat-e Heydarieh (Zava, Zaveh), Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran - The tomb of Qotboddin Heydar (Qutb ad-Din Haydar) (?-1221) a Persian Sufi saint and Malamati-Qalandari Sheikh, of possible Turkic origin. Haydar (the Persian form of his name is Heydar) founded an order of mendicant dervishes called as the Haydariyya known for their celibacy and self-mortification through piercing their own bodies with iron rings. His followers also wore felt and walked barefoot. He is also known by Heyder. Date: circa 1930s
