Bahram wins the Epsom Derby, 1935

A page from The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, showing the racehorse Bahram(marked with a cross) with a clear run round Tattenham Corner at the Epsom Derby in 1935. Pry II is dropping back beaten just ahead of Bahram, whilst Field Trial is in the lead. Robin Goodfellow is on the extreme outside of the next bunch of hourses, in black and gold hoops. Also pictured is the finish, with Bahram passing the post two field lengths in front of Ronbin Goodfellow. Date: 1935

Sudan - A group of Hadendoa Warriors

Sudan - A group of Hadendoa Warriors. The Hadendoa is the name of a nomadic subdivision of the Beja people, known for their support of the Mahdiyyah rebellion during the 1880s to 1890s. The area historically inhabited by the Hadendoa is today parts of Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea. Their elaborate hairdressing (pictured here) gained them the name of "Fuzzy-wuzzies" among the British troops during the Mahdist War. Date: circa 1920s

Sisowath, King of Cambodia shaking the 'trunk' of Fallieres Featured 21 Jul 2016 Print

Sisowath, King of Cambodia shaking the 'trunk' of Fallieres

Satirical postcard showing Sisowath (1840-1927), King of Cambodia shaking the 'trunk' of French President Armand Fallieres ) who is in the form of a benevolent Sacred Elephant. Sisowath is saying: "I carry in my heart a sacred remembrance". Sisowath had run out of money by the end of his visit to France (in July 1906) and had to leave the country in tears and embarrassed (as he was having so much fun!). Date: 1906
