Gertrude Jekyll's Garden fork and lawn shears

Gertrude Jekyll's Garden fork and lawn shears placed on an old mill grindstone at Munstead Wood (Grade I listed), the home of influential British horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932). The house was designed by Edwin Lutyens and was completed in 1896. The garden was created by Jekyll 13 years before the house was built, during which time she in 'The Hut' next door. The main (garden) areas of specific interest are The Nut Walk, the Primrose Garden, the Spring Garden, the Azaleas and Rhododendrons (in the woodland), the Three Corner Garden and the Main Border. The lawn shears were discovered in a tool shed at Munstead Wood. Date: 2016

The Kidnap of American missionary Ellen Maria Stone

Miss Ellen Maria Stone, a Congregationalist missionary and her pregnant fellow missionary friend Katerina StefanovaTsilka are kidnapped on 3rd September 1901 in the Ottoman Balkans by an Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organisation detachment led by the voivoda Yane Sandanski and the sub-voivodas Hristo Chernopeev and Krastyo Asenov seeking independence from the Ottoman. The rebels demanded a ransom be paid of $110, 000. In February 1902, the captors, after initially refusing, accept a reduced sum, and the women were released. Widely covered by the media at the time, the event has been often dubbed "America's first modern hostage crisis". Date: 1901

Hadrian's Wall (Vallum Aelium, Roman Wall, Pict's Wall, Vallum Hadriani) near Houseteads Wood - a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in 122 AD in the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It stretched from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea in the east to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea in the west, and formed the northern limit of the Roman Empire. Date: circa 1930s
