Papyrus of Ani (Book of the Dead) - The Judgement

(Above) -Twelve Gods seated in Order, as judges before a table of offerings. (Below) - The Psychostasia of Weighing of the Conscience of Ani. The Jackal-headed Anubis trying (in the balance) the heart of the deceased against the feather (symbolising the law). On the left, Ani and his wife cn be seen in a pose of devotion; on the right an Ibis-headed Thoth, the Scribe of the Gods, notes down the resultsof this trial, whilst behind, the monster Amemit, the Devourer, looms menacingly. On the left of the balance, Shai (Destiny) with two Goddesses Renenit and Meschenit behind, all under the soul of Ani (symbolisedby a human-headed hawk and the symbol of a cradle). Date: around 1550 BCE

Stephen Ward's sketches of celebrities, 1960

Through a doctor's eyes: a page of celebrities drawn by osteopath and gifted amateur artist Doctor Stephen Ward(1912-1963), as featured in The Illustrated London News in 1960. The sketches pictured here were displayed at the Legatt Brothers gallery in July 1960, comprising of sketches done by Ward, often for free, for his celebrity patients. Sketched here from life are the Right Honorable Hugh Gaitskell, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, M.P Duncan Sandys, Lord Boothby, Sophia Loren, Douglas Fairbanks, Sir Stanley Spencer, Sir Alan Herbert and Derick Heathcoat Armory. Ward went on to produce a series of specially commissioned sketches for the Illustrated London News. Following his involvement in the Profumo affair coming to public prominence, Ward committed suicide in 1963. Date: 1960

Women as electricians WWI

Women in London electric station. During World War One there seemed to be no limit to the number of civilian occupations that women showed themselves cabable of replacing men, even in those requiring highly technical knowledge. Here women running the St Marylebone Borough Electric Sub-station. Upper photograph: Operating the main switchboard and testing the current with a volt-meter. Lower photograph: Working on the meter-board for battery-charging. Date: 1917
