Sir Ernest Shackleton and others, Antarctic

Sir Ernest Shackleton and three members of a polar exploration party, photographed within 111 miles of the South Pole in 1907-9 on board the Nimrod. Shackleton was planning a new expedition, known as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (aka Endurance Expedition), which took place between 1914 and 1917. Date: 1907-9

Edouard Beaupre

Edouard Beaupre, the Willowbunch giant (1881 - 1904), giant and circus performer, and part of Barnum and Bailey's circus. Named here in the Tatler as Arthur Beaupre, the Montana Giant. Standing 7 ft 1 1/2 inches tall, Beaupre died just a few months after this photograph was published of tuberculosis. Date: 1904

King Arthur addresses a Knight

King Arthur was a (possibly mythical) British King from the 5th and early 6th Century, who is believed to have fought the Saxon invaders. It is said that he only chose the noblest of men to fight for him - here he is approcahed by a Knight, keen to fight at his side. King Arthur's army eventually were defeated and were pushed westward into Wales. Date: Circa 600 AD
