Scouts during Wartime

Plymouth Scout's Gallantry gets V.C. Rover Scout Patrick McLaughlin receiving the Scouts Silver Cross from the Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth (Alderman W.J.W. Modley), for gallantry in a Plymouth Blitz. McLaughlin and a Marine went into a blazing church to save the church treasures. The Marine was severely injured and was dragged out by McLaughlin, who then returned to the burning building. The Marine later died, Patrick McLaughlin received severe injuries. Date: 1942

Children at the Princess Mary Village Homes for Little Girls, Addlestone. The cottage homes style development opened in 1870 as an Industrial School for girls placed there by magistrates for reasons such as vagrancy, begging, disrupting schools, or living with prostitutes. In 1933, the site became an Approved School. Date: circa 1908

The Spinhouse (left) on Oudezijdsachterburgwal, now SpinhuisSteeg, Amsterdam. The building, used as a workhouse or house of correction for female vagrants, was erected in 1645 to replace a previous building on the same site. Date: Date unknown
