Training Ship, Exmouth, Grays, Essex

Ship's company on the TS Exmouth, operated from 1876 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board on the Thames off Grays, Essex. In 1903, the original vessel became unsafe and was replaced by an identical ship made of iron and steel. Boys aged 12-15, most coming from London workhouses, were trained in seamanship, with many going on to join the naval services. Date: 1893

The Childrens Home Hospital, London Branch, 23 Bonner Road

Children stand in front of the small hospital set up on Bonner Road, Bethnal Green, to serve the nearby Children's Home and Orphanage. The home was opened in 1871 by a Methodist minister, the Rev Thomas B Stephenson, and eventually formed part of the National Children's Home, now known as Action for Children. Date: Date unknown
