Nude Danae by Jean Straker

A woman reclining on a bed is captured in a shaft of light. A nude study by photographer Jean Straker inspired by the painting Danae by Rembrandt which appeared in his art photography book, Nudes of Jean Straker published by Charles Skilton Ltd in 1958. Straker was best-known for his nude photographic studies and for the ensuing prosecutions he endured under the Obscene Publications Act during the 1950s and 60s. Children at Kingsbury Open Air Baths 1948 Featured 11 Jan 2012 Image

Children at Kingsbury Open Air Baths 1948

Swarms of children having fun in the sun at Kingsbury Open Air Baths in Harrow. Opened in 1939, it was 165 x 75 feet with a depth of 3ft 6ins to 6ft 6ins and a 10ft deep diving area all on a 1.16 acre site. Fun-filled action was displayed from two chutes, and diving training took place from two 3m and one 5m board. The toddlers were not to be missed out, having their own paddling pool to romp and splash around. Terraces and promenade area were unusually situated on the roof of the dressing rooms - originally at ground level.
Closed after 1987 or 1988 season after costs had risen to around 100, 000 a year and the season had been reduced to only 6 weeks. There was a tragic drowning of a 9 year old boy in Sept 1989, after which the pool was filled in by Brent Council. It was demolished by Jan 1994.
Today the site is full of pool rubble and grassed over.

Playing billiards in United Seamans Service club, 1944

A Chinese-American member of the United Seaman's Service plays pool or snooker at the London club during Christmas, 1944. The USS was founded in 1942 to promote the welfare of American seafarers and their dependents, seafarers of all nations, US government military and civilian personnel, and other persons engaged in the maritime industry. There are only seven port centres open around the world today but there were many more during World War Two.
