Scott Polar Expedition 1910 - 1912 - ponies

Michael the pony enjoying a roll in the snow near his stables on Antarctica, during the ill-fated Scott polar expedition 1910 - 1912. Captain Scott wrote of the ponies in his diary, 'Poor brutes. How they must have enjoyed their first roll. I note that now they are picketed together they administer kindly offices to each other; one sees them gnawing away at each other's flans in a most amicable and obliging manner.' Date: 1913

Charles Rowell. The Celebrated Pedestrian. Born in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, England, August 12th 1853. Height 6 ft. 5 ins. Weight 140 lbs. Winner of the Astley Belt. Representing the Long Distance Championship of the World; in the great International Six Days Walking Contest, at Gilmore's Garden, New York, March 10th to 15th 1879, beating O'Leary, Ennis and Harriman. And covering 500 miles and 180 yards in 5 days 19 hours, 58 minutes and 5 seconds. Date: 1879

Steam-Boat Knickerbocker. 320 feet long, 32 ft., 6 inches Beam, 10 ft., 6 incs. Hold, 64 ft. wide including guards, and is propelled by a beam Engine, the cylinder of which is 5 feet 5 inches in diameter, length of stroke 10 feet. Date: ca. 1844
