Boys gardening at St Vincent's Industrial School, Dartford, Kent. The School, for Roman Catholic boys, was established in 1872 and housed children aged 7-15 placed there by magistrates for a variety of reasons such as vagrancy, begging, disrupting schools, or living with prostitutes. Date: 1904

Kingswood Reformatory, Bristol

A view of Kingswood Reformatory near Bristol, opened in 1854 and one of the first such institutions. After 1933 it became an Approved School known as the Kingswood Training School for Boys. Reformatories could house convicted juvenile offenders aged under 16 for a period of 2 to 5 years. Date: 1920
