Sisters of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Portraits of the four sisters of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, pictured in 1930. Top left is Princess Margaret or Margarita of Greece (1905 -1981), Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, top right is Princess Sophia of Greece (1914 - 2001), Princess of Hesse-Cassel, bottom right, Princess Cecilie (Cecile) of Greece (1911 -1937), Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine and bottom left, Princess Theodora of Greece (1906 - 1969), Margravine of Baden. Firefighters and winter snows, WW2 Featured 1 Dec 2011 Print

Firefighters and winter snows, WW2

The early winters of the Second World War were snowy with numerous falls of one or two feet and occasional falls (such as in 1940-1941) in which snow depths of up to 16 feet (drifts) were recorded. The south was quite badly affected, although more particularly the south west and Wales. The winter of 1939-1940 saw the supposed blizzard of the decade in Scotland and England when in late January snow fell widely. As seen here, wartime firemen were kept busy keeping their station yards free of snow

Intellectual child cynic by Frank R Grey Featured 1 Dec 2011 Print

Intellectual child cynic by Frank R Grey

An irritatingly intellectual little boy (called by the cartoonist, Repulsive Rupert) sits reading some hefty tomes at a table and says to his mother, who is darning socks, It will be interesting to see, Mater, if the Pater's child complex will be sufficiently strong this year to overcome his sense of the ridiculous and thus enable him to enact again this year the Santa Claus legend for the benefit of baby and me'. His bemused father, just seen behind the door, is probably regretting the expensive education he has given his son! Date: 1930
