Between Decks on an Emigrant Ship, 1850

Engraving showing 'distressed' needlewomen below decks on an emigrant ship, with their belongings, making themselves confortable before the voyage begins. A charity set up by Mr Sidney Herbert and the Rev Quekett rescued many of these girls from poverty and enabled them to start a new life in Australia

Dinner on an Australian Emigrant Ship, 1849

Engraving showing dinner taking place in the forecastle of an Australian emigrant ship, 1849. The forecastle is an elevated platform in the bows of the ship and can be seen, in this engraving, as a quiet place to take dinner on board a crowded ship. A man in the foreground is eating while his lady companion is smoking a pipe. The ships bell can be seen at top right

The 'Ocean Monarch' Disaster, Irish Sea, 1848

Engraving showing the emigrant ship, 'Ocean Monarch' (left), on fire in the Irish Sea, 24th August 1848. A fire was discovered on board soon after the 'Ocean Monarch', with 396 passengers, set sail from Liverpool. The fire was uncontrollable and a number of small steamers and pleasure boats had to come to the aid of the passengers. One of the vessels which offered help was the 'Affonzo', on which the Prince de Joinville was a passenger. This engraving was made by Morel Fatio, from one of the Prince's sketches. The 'Affonzo' managed to rescue 160 people, with the help of Frederick Jerome who courageously swam to the 'Ocean Monarch' and ran a line between it and the 'Affonzo'
