Hubert Lathams Antoinette IV - Painting by Andrew McGeachy
The Antoinette IV - an early French monoplane, a high-wing aircraft with a fuselage of extremely narrow triangular cross-section and a triangular tail. The plane featured a V8 engine designed by Leon Levavasseur and unusual trapezoidal ailerons hinged to the rear edge of the wings. An Antoinette IV piloted by Hubert Latham made a channel crossing attempt in July 1909 (pictured here), covering 11km before failing with engine trouble. Date: circa 1909
