Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (1853 - 1920), during the time of her marriage to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in January 1874. Queen Victoria had a reservations about a union with the Russian royal family following the Crimean War and did not attend the wedding at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Marie was the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II and a regular visitor to Princess Alices home at Darmstadt where she was introduced to Alfred. Coming from the Imperial Russian royal family who were used to a luxurious lifestyle and consipicuous displays of wealth, the Duchess was unpopular with London society who considered her haughty.
