Framed Print of What is it the Germans dislike so much? H. M. Bateman cartoon
What is it the Germans dislike so much? Frightful, isn t it? This First World War cartoon by H.M. Bateman comments on the increasingly huge artillery guns both sides are using on the Western Front. He pokes fun at German soldiers who complain that British cannons are far too powerful. A British soldier notices in Autumn 1914 that the Germans own much larger artillery guns and responds by building an even bigger gun, which in Spring 1915 has a German soldier weeping and complaining that the British are being unfair. Bateman clearly has no sympathy for the German soldiers for beginning this escalation of firepower in the first place. Date: 1915.
