General Sir Douglas Haig
General Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1921), Leader of the British advance on the Western Front, Commander of the First Corps of the British Expeditionary Force. He succeeded Sir John French as Commander in Chief in December 1915 and led Britain through an exhausting war of attrition for which he was much criticised. After the war, he devoted his time to caring for British ex-servicemen founding the Royal British Legion. Date: 1915
