Cartoon, group of London theatre managers

Cartoon showing a group of disconcerted London theatre managers, including William Holland with the long, spiky moustache, and John Hollingshead just behind him -- Something really ought to be done, or this Health Exhibition will ruin the theatres. A comment on the International Health Exhibition, held in South Kensington, London, from May to October 1884, attracting so much attention that it took custom away from the city's theatres and other cultural venues.
1884

Active Service - WW1 knitting postcard by Harold Copping

Postcard from the First World War depicting a woman knitting comforts for soldiers (note the khaki coloured wool), and gazing wistfully into the distance, no doubt hoping that her own soldier will make it back to Blighty unharmed. Knitting comforts for troops was one way in which women could take part in the war effort, and patterns for various items including hats, mittens, mufflers and waistcoats appeared in women's magazines of the period. Date: 1914-1918
