The Kinecar by William Heath Robinson

Double page illustration by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) showing a well-equipped omnibus transporting passengers while they watch a film. The caption reads,'a luxurious vehicle fitted with many devices for the comfort of passengers returning home on a winter's evening, an interesting (and true) forecast for the future of travel. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular. LCC-LFB Merryweather self-propelled Fire King pump

First introduced into the UK by Merryweather of Greenwich, SE London, in 1899, by 1907 twenty-one Fire Kings were in operational use around the country, including the London Fire Brigade. A modified Fire King was stationed at Whitefriars fire station in the City of London. The Fire King could travel at a speed of 20-30 mph but was unable to negotiate a significant gradient without stopping to build a sufficient head of steam. Seen here with crew at the London Fire Brigade headquarters, Southwark SE1

LCC-LFB Dual purpose pump escape at Lambeth HQ

A Dennis F7 pump escape at Lambeth HQ, a classic postwar fire engine newly in service in London. It was powered by a 150 bhp 5.7 litre Rolls-Royce engine and served initially at Lambeth Fire Station, and latterly at other fire stations in SE London until it was retired in 1968. The F7 was a truly beautiful looking fire engine with a coach-built body and a fine road performance. Many F7s went into service in fire brigades throughout the UK
