Francis II, king of the Two Sicilies (1859-1860) was forced to abdicate, while a plebiscite (21-22 October 1860) sanctioned the union of the Two Sicilies to the new Kingdom of Italy. Coloured lantern slide of the piazza de'Martiri in naples, Italy. This square took on patritoic significance in 1861 when Italy was united. The monument in the centre was erected in 1866. There are 4 lions at the base of the monument, these represent 4 different patriotic struggles- Neopolitan revolution of 1799, uprisings in 1820 and 1848, and the war of unification in 1860..
