Cinderella ballet, Ugly Sisters trying to dance

The Ugly Sisters try to follow their dancing master while Cinderella stands disconsolately by the fire. A scene from a ballet version of Cinderella, based on French and Spanish fairytales. One version, with music by Prokofiev, was first performed by Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1948.

Cartoon, group of London theatre managers

Cartoon showing a group of disconcerted London theatre managers, including William Holland with the long, spiky moustache, and John Hollingshead just behind him -- Something really ought to be done, or this Health Exhibition will ruin the theatres. A comment on the International Health Exhibition, held in South Kensington, London, from May to October 1884, attracting so much attention that it took custom away from the city's theatres and other cultural venues.

Cartoon, Sir William Vernon Harcourt (1827-1904), Home Secretary in Gladstone's newly elected Liberal government. On his appointment, a re-election was required; he lost his seat by a small number of votes, and another seat had to be found for him. Here, a bus conductor is asking for someone to make room for him on the Parliamentary Omnibus.
