Playtime at Wimbledon. by William Heath Robinson

The new craze of Jazz Tennis caught in full swing by our extra special artist. A humorous illustration of tennis players dancing the foxtrot on a tennis court. The umpire is watching over them whilst enjoying a cigar. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featured mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popluar. Please note: Credit must appear as Courtesy of the estate of Mrs J.C.Robinson/Pollinger Ltd/ILN/Mary Evan"

The fixed umpire

The fixed umpire. Illustration shows a baseball game between the Ultimate Consumer AC and the Monopoly Giants where a Giants ballplayer is sliding head-first into a base and is being tagged out by an Ultimate Consumer AC ballplayer with a ball labeled Tariff Reduction; despite not even reaching the base, the umpire labeled Congress calls the baserunner, who winks and points at the umpire, safe. Cricket Team in Oxford

A superb photographic postcard of an Oxford cricket team, sporting a fine selection of patterned blazers, straw boater hats, flannel whites and boots. Definitely the standout individual however is the umpire (left) who appears to be Pancho Villa in heavy disguise under his umpire's coat and large white floppy hat! Date: 1905
