Portsmouth - Illuminated Tram Car to celebrate French Fleet

Portsmouth - An illuminated Tram Car, decorated to celebrate the French Fleet stationed in Portsmouth during 1905. The Star and Crescent symbol has been used by the City of Portsmouth as it's coat of arms since at least the seventeenth century and probably much longer. This symbol is also widely used as an Islamic symbol and is found on the flags of many Islamic nations, and came to Portsmouth due to links via King Richard I to Constantinople and Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus (who captured Richard) during the Third Crusade. Date: 1905

Noblesse oblige - Swiss caring for injured soldiers

Noblesse oblige - Whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly. Despite neutrality in world conflict, the Swiss recognise their obligations due to their status to care for those injured in war. The floral bouquet appears to be a token of gratitude from France. Date: 1916

Print shows Jules Duruof and his wife being rescued at sea from the sinking basket of their balloon Le Tricolore which lost altitude over the North Sea off the coast of England. Two fishermen help Mrs. Duruof into their boat while Duruof clings to the basket; a larger fishing vessel or sailboat approaches on the left. The balloon which was carried off by the wind after the Duruofs were rescued was eventually recovered in the Skagerrak. Date between 1870 and 1880.
