"Tempations of the Nevill.: St. Anthony up to Date: Curbing the Carnal Appetite." A sweating man tries desperately to resist the allure of a tasty meal that has been laid out on his table, with a copy of the Daily Flail flung down on the floor next to him. Voluntary rationing had been introduced in Britain in 1917, as a prelude to compulsory rationing of certain foodstuffs the following year. Date: 1917
