Shoreditch Cottage Homes, Hornchurch, Essex
Boys in surplices leaving the chapel at the Shoreditch Union cottage homes, Hornchurch, Essex. Opened in 1889 to house pauper children away from the workhouse, the homes were in the style of a village street - eleven 'cottages' each housed 30 children. There were also schools, a swimming bath, band room, needlework room, workshops, and infirmary.

The Church in the firing-line
A French soldier-priest ministering to his comrades under fire. In 1915, it was estimated that over 20, 000 priests served in the French army in some capacity. Services were often carried out in the trenches, and the priest would wear his surplice over his uniform where possible.
