Reconstruction of the Stone circles at Avebury, Wiltshire

Reconstruction (after J. Britton) of the Stone circles at Avebury, Wiltshire - The Great stone circle, it is said, was approached by two avenues of 200 stones each, which took a sinuous course south-east and south-west and represented a snake transmitted through a circle. Stukeley put its foundation at 1859 BC, the year of the death of Sarah, Abraham's wife (!!). The present village of Avebury has grown up amidst the stones of his ancient temple'. Longest Day at Stonehenge, Wiltshire Featured Print

Longest Day at Stonehenge, Wiltshire

People gathering at Stonehenge, Wiltshire on the longest day of the year, on or near 21 June 1912. This photograph shows a daybreak pilgrimage by members of The Universal Bond of the Sons of Men, or Church of the Universal Bond. This was a religious group founded in Britain in the early 20th century by George W MacGregor Reid, promoting socialist revolution, anti-imperialism and sun worship. By 1912 Reid was becoming attracted to Druidism, especially as Stonehenge was at the time regarded as a solar temple. His church began holding rituals there, and this continued until the site was given to the state in 1918. When the growing Stonehenge free festival caused the monument to be closed at midsummer in 1985, the Church faded into obscurity but has maintained a presence at the reopened solstice festivities since 2000

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Sheffield United, F.A. Cup Final, 1901

Photograph of the 1901 F.A. Cup Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United held at Bolton. The Cup was won by Tottenham, the first non-league team to win the Cup since the league was instigated, in a replay by 3 goals to 1. The photograph shows the Sheffield United goalkeeper, William Fatty Foulke, standing over a Tottenham striker after a collision between the two of them. One of the largest men ever to play professional football, Foulke weighed 22 stone when he retired from football
