1908 Olympic Ice Skaters

A montage of competitors who took part in the figure skating events at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The event was held at the Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge. This was the first time a winter sport had been featured in the Olympic Games. It would be another sixteen years before the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix in1924. From left to right: 1. Edinburgh Marine Gardens, Portobello, Scotland. Marine Gardens Pleasure Park was constructed at Seafield, Portobello in 1909, using many of the buildings that had formed the Scottish National Exhibition at Saughton Park in 1908. Buildings on the site included: an alfresco theatre, an industrial hall, a large ballroom, a scenic railway, a rustic mill with water wheel and a motor cycle race track (a number of which are depicted on this postcard). Date: circa 1909
