1908 Olympic Ice Skaters

A montage of competitors who took part in the figure skating events at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The event was held at the Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge. This was the first time a winter sport had been featured in the Olympic Games. It would be another sixteen years before the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix in1924. From left to right: 1. The latest craze - ballet on skates, 1929

Photographs reporting on the craze for ice dancing over normal dancing in 1929. The skaters featured were performing ice cabaret at the Hammersmith Ice-Drome which opened on 30 December 1929 on the site of the old Palais de Danse. The Ice-Drome was vast and the largest in London. Top left shows Miss Freda Whitaker, the well-known exhibition skater, rehearsing with her partner Alfredo. Top right shows Miss Muriel Lambton and Miss Elina Munro and the bottom image shows Miss Freda Whitaker's Skating Girls. Date: 1929
