LCC-LFB Kensington fire station, SW London

Located in Old Court Place near Kensington Church Street, Kensington fire station retained a horse drawn turntable ladder until 1921 when it was finally replaced by a motorised version. It was the Brigade's last remaining horse drawn fire engine. Seen here is the appliance room, with the horses waiting in their stalls and the fire engines in readiness for the next call. In the corner is the station watchroom with a fireman sitting at the desk.

LCC-LFB, Cannon Street fire station, City of London

The Cannon Street fire station was opened in 1906. Seen here is the appliance room. Fire brigade horses were by now being replaced by motorised fire appliances, but the stalls for the horses which pulled the horse drawn turntable ladder can be seen behind the electric-driven escape van. The batteries for this escape-van were stored under the engine's bonnet and the fire engine weighed about two tons. The power driven pump and pump-escape and horse drawn turntable ladder await the next call.

Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, Elysian Park, California

Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, overlooking the Los Angeles River and surrounded by fields. Hundreds of pigeons perched on top of two of the cotes. The Farm was established in 1898 and located alongside the Los Angeles River and across from Elysian Park. It benefited from its proximity to the railroad tracks, as the free-flying pigeons could scavenge grain dropped from passing railroad cars. In 1914, heavy rains caused the Los Angeles river to flood, and much of the farm was washed away. Many of the estimated 500, 000 birds were killed as a result of the damage. Date: circa 1906
