Map of Spain showing the situation at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, July 1936. The heaviest fighting in July took place in the places underlined on the map: Madrid, Barcelona, Oviedo, Saragossa, Seville, Malaga, Cadiz and La Linea. General Franco's Army of Africa was located in Spanish Morocco, whilst Franco's stronghold in Northern Spain was around the city of Burgos.
