Operation Telic', compiled by WO2 Penfound, for an exhibition at the NAM provisionally entitled 'Conflict' (Project: Operation TELIC).Associated with 1 Company, 1st Battalion, The Irish Guards, Iraq (2003-).The family were part of a column of people fleeing the city of Basra when it and the soldiers of the 1st Battalion No 2 Company, The Irish Guards, manning a checkpoint on the outskirts of Basra, came under small arms fire from two Iraqi positions several hundred meters away. The Irish guards were trying to give as much protection to the local civilians as well as ensuring no Iraqi Military or Militia slipped through the checkpoint disguised as ordinary civilians. After returning small arms fire and bringing in artillery fire on the two positions the soldiers were then in a position to allow free access across the checkpoint. Date: 2003

Suffragette Moveable Card Toy Elusive Christabel

A moveable card or optical toy referring to the W.S.P.U leader Christabel Pankhurst, who eluded police by fleeing to France in 1912. It comprises a sheet of card with a tab at the base which, when pulled, reveals a second picture. The first has Christabel, with policeman and outstretched hands, with the caption, 'They seek her here, they seek her there, Detectives prowling everywhere. Their heads with big importance swell'. The second shows two policemen crashing into one another, with caption, 'She's Gone! ELUSIVE CHRISTABEL' Date: 1912

Ejectment of Irish Tenantry - the day after the ejectment

Scene showing an Irish peasant farming family the day after being evicted from their home during the time of the Irish Potato Famine. With few belongings, they seek shelter in some form of makeshift hovel. As landlords sought to rid their estates of pauperized farmers and labourers, as many as 500, 000 people were evicted in the years from 1846 to 1854.
