The Spook Suspected by Bruce Bairnsfather, WW1 cartoon

'Old Bill has always felt that there was something reminiscent of Bert about the way he got that nasty crack over the head from a tambourine at that little bit of a seance they had theother night.' Veteran soldier, Old Bill, the creation of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather in his cartoons for The Bystander, takes part in a seance and suspects that one of the mischievous spirits might in fact be his old pal Bert. Photograph of a reconstruction of one of the teleplasmic "hands" or pseudopods, often witnessed at the Rudi Schneider sances, 1929. This photograph also shows Rudi Schneider being controlled by Harry Price during a sance. This is one of series of photographs documenting Harry Price's investigations into the mediumistic abilities of the brothers Rudi and Willi Schneider. Rudi Schneider (27 July 1908 - 1957), son of Josef Schneider and brother of Willi Schneider, was an Austrian spritualist and Physical Medium. His career was covered extensively by the journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, and he took part in a number of notable experiments conducted by paranormal researchers/debunkers, including Harry Price, Albert von Schrenck-Notzing and Eric J. Dingwall. Some of which declared him to be a fraud, and others of which were unable to find evidence of trickery. HPG/1/6/2 (vii)"
