Anton Chekhov, Russian writer (1860-1904) at the centre of a group of people from the Moscow Art Theatre -- Constantin Stanislavski on his right, Olga Knipper (Chekhov's wife) to Stanislavski's right, Lilina Andreyev to Chekhov's left (all identified on original). On this occasion he read his play The Seagull to them.

Muslim Auxiliary crew of the auxiliary cruiser of the Imperial German Navy SMS 'Mowe' ('Seagull'), under the command of Lt. Commander Nikolaus Burggraf, Graf ('Count') zu Dohna-Schlodien. The crew were far better able to cope with the heat of combat operations in the southern hemisphere and the ship under the command of zu Dohna achieved a number of spectacular successes.
