Thames Embankment Section

Illustration from 1867 showing a cross-section of the Thames Embankment, at that time in construction and completed in 1870. The embankment was built to protect Joseph Bazalgette's low-level sewers and the underground railway, as well as reclaim ground for riverside roads and gardens behind their curved granite-faced river walls. St. Pauli Landungsbrucken, Hamburg, Germany

The St. Pauli Landungsbrucken (St. Pauli Landing Bridges), part of the Hamburg Harbour, Hamburg, Germany, directly on the Elbe River. The eastern end of the building complex is marked by the Pegelturm (water level tower), which can be seen to the back left on this card. This is used to track the height of tidal flow in the Elbe. Date: circa 1910s
