The paddle steamer Leith arriving at Grantham Pier, Edinburgh. Built by R.Menzies & Sons for the General Steam Navigation Co 1837 and used by GSNC for coastal service between Leith and London. At that time the largest steam ship built. Aquatint engraving after William John Huggins (1781-1845) seen flying the White Ensign and with cannon ports opened. Date: 1837

Boys learning carpentry and plumbing on the Training Ship Wellesley, on the River Tyne at North Shields, Northumberland. In 1868, James Hall and other local businessmen set up a charity to provide shelter for Tyneside waifs and train young men for naval service. Their base from 1874 was the Wellesley until a fire in 1914 forced the institution ashore to become the Wellesley Nautical School

Lady Teignmouth's Budgerow, Sunderbans, Bengal, by Hubert Cornish (1757-1832). The houseboat contained a drawing room, a bedroom and a vestibule; it is flying the East India Company flag. Cornish was brother-in-law and Secretary to the Governor-General of India, the first Lord Teignmouth. (1 of 6) Date: circa 1795
