The Pilsener Pump for tapping the enemy's beer; another hilariously convoluted contraption to foil the enemy during World War I from William Heath Robinson. Naturally, the Germans were sitting comfortably smoking pipes and drinking tankards of beer. In fact, the German army had fewer rations than the British. Coupons for petrol found inside a ration book issued by Surrey County Council, 5 September 1939. Petrol rations were based on the horsepower of a vehicle, with those of higher engine speeds having access to greater volumes of fuel. This ration book belonged to the owner of an eight-nine horsepower vehicle and subsequently contains coupons for two "units", i.e. two gallons.
