Female soldier Y Company, Princess of Waless Royal Regiment

Digital photograph: A female soldier serving with Y Company, The 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, is one of a platoon of soldiers to visit a local Iraqi Police Training facility as part of on going negotiations and assistance provided to the local law enforcement.Photographed by WO2 Giles Penfound, Army Media Operations, Al Amarah, Maysan, southern Iraq, Operation TELIC 4, 4 July 2004.From a CD entitled Iraq Conflict. Operation Telic, compiled by WO2 Penfound, for an exhibition at the NAM provisionally entitled Portrait (Project: Operation TELIC).The Iraqi police were extremely hospitable and friendly and see the female member of the British unit as something of a curiosity. Perhaps because of her rarety value she became somewhat crowded by the Iraqi men to the point where I asked if she needed me to fend them off and protect her. Her reply was something like don't worry Sir I can handle them and indeed she did. Date: 2004

Three men are holding cigarettes. The men are wearing the patients uniform of hospital blues - blue serge jacket and trousers, usually worn with a white shirt and red tie. The trousers of the man on the right of the photograph have been rolled up as they are too long for him. Hospital blues were provided one one size only. The man on the left of the photograph is wearing a full-length overcoat. All of the men are wearing carpet slippers which were provided for the men to wear indoors at the hospitals. Typically these were made by local Hospital Supply Depots staffed by volunteers. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1915
