Fortnum & Mason's Christmas Box for soldiers, WW1

Advertisement for quintessential London department store, Fortnum & Mason, in particular their Thirty Shilling Xmas Box of selected provisions which could be sent to the front for lucky soldiers (though probably officers!). Latest date for dispatch to France was 14 December 1917 and a war catalogue was available upon application. The box contained a fine selection of food including real turtle soup, roast goose, brandy sauce and cherries in brandy. Date: 1917

Lady Violet Brassey's sons, Cyril and Gerard Featured Print

Lady Violet Brassey's sons, Cyril and Gerard

Delightful portrait of Cyril and Gerard Brassey, dressed in outfits typical of Edwardian upper class children. The older boy is in a wool jacket, similar to a Norfolk style jacket wiith matching waistcoat and breeches while the younger boy is wearing a very fanciful costume, consisting of side-buttoning tunic with flounced collar and cuffs worn with old style buckled shoes - very much in the Little Lord Fauntleroy style. Gerard, the younger one, was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards and was killed in action on the 27th August 1918. Date: 1903
