Grafiti Wall, Belfast, 1973

?Graf?ti Wall?, Belfast, 1973 - Oil on board, by Ralph Lillford, 1973. Associated with Northern Ireland (1969-2007). During ?the Troubles?, Belfast street walls became a place for rival sectarian graf?ti, often painted layer upon layer. A form of psychological warfare which also demonstrated control of terrain, the slogans were often directed at the British Army, exhorting them to ?go home?, or else boasted of paramilitary loyalties, such as ?Provos Rule?. Periodically the Army would drive past these walls and throw paint bombs at the slogans. The soldier wears a fragmentation vest, commonly known as a flak jacket, over DPM (disruptive pattern material) jacket and trousers. He wears his visor up on his helmet and carries an anti-riot shield. Date: 1974

Conference table, Livadia Palace, Yalta, Ukraine

View of the conference table in the Livadia (Livadija) Palace, Yalta, Ukraine, where the historic February 1945 meeting took place between Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. Today the palace houses a museum, but it is sometimes used by the Ukrainian authorities for international summits. At one time it was a summer retreat of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and his family (building was completed in 1911)

Lecture on Stephen Grays discoveries in electricity

A lecture at the Charterhouse, London on Stephen Gray's discoveries in electricity. In the early eighteenth century, Gray demonstrated that charges of electricity could be conducted by some materials for distances as great as 765 feet, while others did not conduct electricity at all. Eventually, he was able to send charges through 88 metres of wire suspended on silken threads to operate an electroscope - an instrument used to detect static electricity. By sending an electrical signal from one place to another, Gray established the basic principle of the electric telegraph
