Dr William Beebe (1877-1962), American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, author and deep sea explorer, seen here in Bermuda, viewed from inside the Bathysphere porthole window made of quartz before his descent into the depths of the ocean. The Bathysphere was a spherical diving container. Date: 1932

Robert Falcon Scott and Peter Markham Scott, c.1909
Photograph of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the English naval commander and explorer, and his son, Peter Markham Scott, taken in late 1909 or early 1910. Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) departed for Antarctica in 1910, where he died in 1912, having led the second team to reach the South Pole. Peter Scott (1909-1989) achieved fame in later life as an artist and ornithologist.
