West African Tuareg Horse Warriors

West African Tuareg Warriors, in traditional veiled headdresses, all mounted on fine horse and carrying spears and enormous shields. The Tuareg are a Berber nomadic pastoralist people, known as the People of the Veil'. The wearing of the Alasho veil by Tuareg men originates from the belief that such action wards off evil spirits. Tuareg Tribesmen - Sahara - West Africa - posing for this photograph with their spears. Two other Tuareg self-designations are Kel Tamasheq meaning "speakers of Tamasheq", and Kel Tagelmust, meaning "veiled people" in allusion to the tagelmust garment that is traditionally worn by Tuareg men (as shown clearly on this photograph). Turkmenistan - Delivery of some modern cot beds

The Modern World reaches everywhere (or at least the Soviet propaganda machine!)... A family in Turkmenistan receive some new metal-frame cot beds for their young children, which stand somewhat uncomfortably in front of their traditional yurt tents! Date: circa 1920s
